Six ways to Protect your eyesight this holiday season

  1. Reduce the use of gadgets

The best thing that happened a few years ago is the invention of the telephone and particularly the mobile device with the internet. It has enabled communication and connectivity with people from any part of the world. The downside has been that people spend too much time on their screens to the detriment of their health. Check out our article on the effect of gadgets on our day to day life. Decide to push your phone or tablet away from time to time for your me time with no gadgets and enjoy the peace and stillness that comes with it. Gadgets can be so destructive. If holding parties, encourage conversations with no gadgets. This way people are forced to know each other, talk and create laughter.

2. Wear sunglasses-If taking holidays to hot areas like our coastline, use sunglasses to protect your eyes. Sun rays and too much light are injurious to the macula, the part of the eye that supports your greatest vision. Get sunglasses with UV protection and polarized sunglasses to reduce the glare. As you pick sunglasses remember to also get sunglasses for your children. They have a longer time to live and therefore need to protect themselves more.

3. Wear hats-These like sunglasses protect not just your eyes but also your facial and neck skin if you will be outdoors for a long time. This avoids the unsightly skin tans that come with extreme exposure to sunlight on exposed areas and the discomfort of extreme sunlight. Besides, shielding your skin reduces the risk for skin cancer.

4. Get enough sleep-Sleep rejuvenates your brain and eyes are an extension of the brain. Get at least 7 hours of sleep every day and you will have a very productive day. Children need much more time sleeping, so discourage the night owls, especially during the holiday season. Lack of sleep deprives one of clarity of thought and judgement or the power to innovate. Sleep should be uninterrupted. You need continuous sleep to harness the benefits of sleep. Quality sleep means that you are able to fall asleep within 30 minutes of getting to bed and you have deep sleep for at least 85% of the time you are in bed. You can therefore only get deep sleep if there is enough time to get to deep sleep. Take advantage of the holidays to give your yourself decent sleep and your brain and eyes will thank you for it.

5. Eat in moderation– Do not overburden your system with too much food that you do not need. Holidays are a time of metabolic overload and metabolic stress. This is due to the consumption of animal products and alcohol that the body has to work extremely hard to eliminate the byproducts. This results in fatigue and will eventually contribute to lifestyle diseases like diabetes that will eventually affect the eyes. The plan is therefore to eat and drink in moderation. Eating fruits and vegetables at least 30 minutes before a major meal reduces the amount of food that you will eat and increases the absorption of the vitamins and minerals therein. This helps you have a decent sleep and comfortable sleep.

6. Do more outdoor games– When outdoors eyes are relaxed as the focus is not on minute details. Playing outdoors reduces the risk of nearsightedness especially in children because they are able to focus at a distance. Outdoors encourages conversations, stories and laughter without the use of gadgets.
